Herd Initiatives

Sisterherd Pad Project

The seeds for our first initiative were planted in early summer 2024 when Channa Beth met with several young women in Kenya who discussed the challenges that girls face, which impede the ability to control their lives. A key issue was the lack of sanitary products, which can prevent girls from attending school during their period or can lead to exchanging sexual favors for money to buy sanitary products.

In response, friends and family in the U.S. committed to producing 2,000 eco-friendly, reusable pads to distribute to adolescent girls in six schools in the Maasai Mara. However, we also recognized that providing pads was just the beginning and resolved to teach girls and women sewing skills to create their own pads, establishing a self-sustaining program to meet community needs and offer income-generating opportunities.

Crafted to be both eco-friendly and super absorbent, our pads are made with layers of cotton flannel and Zorb, a revolutionary product free of plastic and harmful chemicals.

Since October 2024, over 3000 pads have been distributed, providing more than 900 Kenyan girls with the necessary sanitary products.

With open hearts and willing hands, friends, family, and supporters have come together, offering their time, their love, and their belief in our mission.

And so, the Sisterherd Pad Project emerged. Three E3 Board members traveled to the Mara in October 2024 with 2500 eco-friendly, reusable menstrual pads and 5 portable sewing machines. During a three-day training session, our Sisterherd Strong team engaged with 25 women and 10 adolescent girls to teach skills necessary to make the pads.
And this was just the beginning.  In January, a Sisterherd Strong board member distributed 300 pads in western Kenya and two other colleagues have delivered an additional 200 pads at 3 locations in Nairobi.
